CRAYOLA AIR DRY CLAY SNAIL SCULPTURES are a great introduction to using clay. Easy beginner shapes are easy for little hands to make.
Materials
Crayola AIR DRY CLAY, toothpick, water cups, cardboard or chip board squares, glue, acrylic or tempera paint, paint brushes, paper towels, pencil, paint tray, white printer paper.
This is a 2 part project. 1 class sculpting and the next class to paint.
DIRECTIONS
I give each student a piece of standard size printer paper (8.5×11) to roll out on and to measure the length. We sculpt the clay snail sculptures by rolling out a piece of clay for the shell. Roll out a sausage shape the width of the paper (8.5in). Having the paper helps the students to measure it as they are rolling the clay out. Then slowly coil it for the snail shell.
With another piece of clay roll a little sausage shaped body. Use a toothpick score the body and attach the coil snail shell to the snail body.
Use a little bit of water to smooth out any cracks in the clay.
The clay dries in a day or 2.
Begin part 2 of the project by gluing the dry clay snails down to the card board.
Paint the snail and the cardboard with acrylic or tempera paint.
